Dinara Safina is one of the players featured in the 2008 Tennis Players to Watch series. (Dinara Safina Makes Her Mark as Russians Continue to Dominate Tennis).
Nikolay Davydenko: World number four player Kolya whines about not being able to relocate to Moscow because he cannot afford an apartment there. Davydenko is a Russian citizen of Ukrainian origin, currently living in Germany, lists tax-haven Monte Carlo as his permanent residence, AND has applied for Austrian citizenship. Talk about Globalization! (Tvoy Den).
Maria Kirilenko: Top seed Russian Maria Kirilenko defeated German Sabine Lisicki with a 6-3, 6-3 victory for a spot in the quarter-finals of the ninth $75,000 ITF Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa. (Khaleej Times)
Russian Mafia: In an interview with a Russian newspaper, John McEnroe plays down his controversial comments about “the Russian mafia infiltrating tennis.” He said, “I didn’t talk about the “Russian” mafia per se, but more about the “Russian mafia methods” that any criminal organization might use to infiltrate the sport.” Well… to me it sounds the same in a more “politically correct” manner. Check out my earlier post about how the “Russian mafia plays sports.”
